I have been clutter-clearing for years now but it is surprising what your eyes don't see. For instance - I no longer buy Christmas decorations and gave my tree and ornaments away years ago (I don't see the point of storing lots of stuff that only gets used once a year for a couple of weeks.) Instead, every year I buy dried twigs and seed pods that have been sprayed silver or gold. As they are not especially Christmassy I leave them in their vases all year round. This is just one of my blind-spots as looking for something to clear out last week I suddenly realised that I had three tall vases of dead stuff that I never looked at and didn't especially like! So into the dustbin went all the grotty, dusty stuff (no-one seemed to want my old, dead flowers!) My mantelpieces look so much nicer free of clutter.
When you have cleared a lot of stuff away what is left is either essentials or complete rubbish which you haven't yet identified as such and that needs a long hard look at and perhaps a bit of lateral thinking.
I am now looking around for my next blind-spot (I hope it doesn't turn out to be the dog or cats!!)

The cats and dogs can stay, and if you ask nice you can even get more!
ReplyDeleteI am trying to sell my home so I just did a HUGE purge. It feels so good to have clear spaces. It is strange to go in my cupboards and actually have extra space! I am now wanting to get rid of even more stuff. I don't really need 86 pens. I don't need so many drinking glasses. I don't need so many containers to store food. It has to go!
The best way I get rid of stuff is by keeping a box by the back door. Every time I come across something I don't use I put it in the box. When the box if full I take it to charity. Then it starts all over again! :-)
I, too, keep a basket for my surplus stuff on every floor (I have a three-storey house) and it is a really good idea as you can chuck stuff out as you think of it instead of putting it aside for later.
ReplyDeleteDon't worry - the dog and cats are still here but I don't want any more thanks!
